The main thing disrupting the general flow are excuses.I'm sorry I'm late. After getting up late for the third time this week, you maneuver yourself into the vehicle, hurry up, and waltz into work late for the umpteenth time.Marshall Goldsmith, a business instructor, mentor and writer, composes on his site concerning why giving a reason for being late doesn't change anything. When you're late to an arrangement and you hear yourself saying, 'I'm sorry I'm late however the traffic was murder,' stop at the word 'sorry.' Blaming traffic doesn't pardon the way that you kept individuals pausing, Goldsmith syas. You ought to have begun before. A Resume Is Like A First Date Heres How To Make Employers Fall For You
A Resume Is Like a First Date: Hereâs How to Make Employers Fall for You In some ways, a primary date and a resume have much in common. Modern relationship rules* embrace things like: donât talk an excessive amount of about yourself; remember to make good eye contact; and, above all else, be your self. Similarly, job seekers use tools like constructing rapport, communicating value and articulating their value in their resume to realize access to job opportunities. In a job interview, our aim is to make ourselves relevant and compelling, to set ourselves apart from the competitors and to trigger the hiring manager to say, âI can't find anybody higher than this candidate!â Sounds like the identical goals for a primary date, doesnât it? Regardless of whether the candidate or individual wants the job (or a second date), the aim is to get the supply. To give your self one of the best likelihood for fulfillment, your resume (and first dates) ought to observe these strategies: Start With the Why On a primary date, you need to ask good questions, listen for the answers and respond accordingly. Your objective is to understand the motivation and drive behind the individualâs answers and offer your own. Simply answering questions is not relationship constructing. Similarly, the commonest mistake job candidates make on resumes is itemizing the what, how and where of their background and expertise but forgetting to communicate the why. By default, a resume is a list of what you probably did prior to now â" from your professional roles to your successes and achievements. But extra importantly, a resume should indicate what you might be keen about, why youâve achieved the objectives you did, what youâre on the lookout for subsequent and the way you see your capacity to provide results and add value in your next job. Add language to your resume that highlights what youâre able to, what you aspire to, the place you want to develop your career and what you care about, and then join that narrative together with your previous. Donât forget to relate your future goals and goals to your current place. Sound Like Yourself On a first date, itâs unwell-advised to act like somebody apart from your authentic self. Why would you? You run the danger that the particular person youâre meeting actually does need to know someone like the actual you⦠and can miss that opportunity. Or, you would create this dazzling and charming (and inauthentic) persona your date likes⦠then you definitelyâll have to both maintain that facade or come clear later. Iâve seen many resumes that donât sound or look like the individual Iâm sitting across from. In some instances, professional resume writers craft the resumeâs content material to the point that the candidate canât even converse to the experience listed. Be positive youâll feel proud and focused whenever you hand over your resume. Can you communicate to each job, end result and accomplishment listed? Does your resume reflect your humor, energy, ardour and confidence? If your resume looks subtle and skilled, however youâre relaxed and casual, it is going to be a challenge to help a hiring supervisor see that you simplyâre the identical person listed on the pages. Leave Something For the Interview Ever had that first date the place the particular person feels a have to inform you every little thing about themselves? It definitely doesnât build intrigue and interest. Sometimes too much info is simply that â" too much. Have you ever seen a 4-page, single-spaced resume? Did you learn the whole thing? Me neither. Your resume does not want to include every little thing you ever did from grade college forward, nor every accomplishment, award and success youâve achieved. It ought to spotlight the related skills, skills, experiences and value the hiring manager is recruiting for. Leaving some gadgets off your resume may really feel risky. You actually want to incorporate the certifications and key phrases the resume reviewer will need to put you through to an interview, but you do not need to incorporate everything. You have room in your cowl letter to focus on some of your background and can hyperlink to your online profiles (like LinkedIn) to supplement your skills and backgrou nd even more. Customize to the Job Requirements In the relationship sport, deciding whether or not you and one other particular person fit properly collectively starts with understanding what youâre on the lookout for and what they are looking for. Then, as it feels appropriate and natural, you find widespread areas and build from there. Much like we do with a resume. As a job seeker, your resume ought to be modular â" capable of be adjusted and tweaked to fit the job requirements. A one-measurement-matches-all resume is like job in search of with a blindfold on. (Click right here to tweet this thought.) Hiring managers and recruiters are often overwhelmed with resumes for open positions. The easier you can also make their job, the extra probably your resume will get reviewed. For instance, look through every job requirement or job description and determine: Leave Off the Personal Info Many job seekers make the mistake of together with their start date (including 12 months), marital standing and medical state of affairs on their resume and online profiles. This information just isn't required and may by no means be a approach to market your self for a job or profession. It is okay, however, to include a âpersonal pursuitsâ part on a resume or on-line profile. In this case, you need to still veer away from data that can be utilized to dismiss you and as a substitute give attention to hobbies, pursuits and skills that relate to the job you seek. For occasion, you would possibly say, âenthusiastic about environmental causes and sustainabilityâ when youâre on the lookout for a profession in pure assets exploration. While I do advocate sharing marital information on a date (yikes!), I also donât consider itâs related to share medical limitations or birth date (together with year) on a first date. Final notice: A resume is a part of your toolkit, not the co mplete solution. Successful job seekers construct their personal model and popularity and have a resume, which serves as an extension of all that data. *In the spirit of full disclosure, it has been well over 13 years for the reason that creator has had a âfirst date.â However, fortunately married to her husband, she does provide this steerage to her two adult sons. Whatâs probably the most mortifying experience youâve had, either on a date or an interview? Share in the feedback! This submit initially appeared at Unleashing Your Brand. Image: Flickr

Start leveraging new practices and trends to outpace your job-seeking competition as soon as possible. A strong social media presence, keyword-rich executive resume, cutting-edge search methods, and intensive follow-up are now required to land a choice leadership position. Here are 5-must-know executive job search, LinkedIn, and resume trends youll need to win your next leadership opportunity: 1 Employ social media; its now a requirement for job search success. Still ignoring LinkedIn or waiting to update your Profile? Youâll want to switch tactics quickly, whether your job search is looming over the next few months or you anticipate making a change in the future. Itâs been said by employers that if you arenât on LinkedIn, you donât exist. Consider this: the average CEO now possesses more than 900 LinkedIn connections and recruiters often spend HOURS assessing your digital identity before presenting you to their clients. LinkedIn in now in use worldwide, and with 610+ million registered users, it wont decrease in popularity anytime soon. Therefore, youâll benefit from polishing your Profile, developing a powerful LinkedIn Headline, spending time choosing a professional photo for the site, writing a solid Summary, and injecting a solid mix of keywords to draw recruiter traffic. 2 Be ready! Downsizing and mergers are now routine. If you havenât already faced massive changes in your company structure, an imminent merger could bring them home â" fast. Depending on the source, some analysts predict MA activity will continue to mirror recent years, while others expect changes among mostly smaller and privately held firms. In addition, companies are expected to continue announcing layoffs that could affect you and your colleagues. While these changes bring uncertainty to nearly every employee, itâs often executives who experience the most disruption in their routines â" with average job searches taking anywhere from several months to a year, particularly when seeking an ideal C-level position. In other words, prepare! Build a sound social media strategy, list of target companies, and compelling executive resume long before changes hit your industry or employer. 3 Realize that recruiters now work globally, instead of limiting their practices to your city. In the past, recruiters often âcoveredâ an area bounded by geography and industry. Now, the recruiter you speak with is more likely to be active on social media and sourcing candidates from all over the world. To find recruiters who specialize in your field, use LinkedIns Search function or run a Google search on recruiter for COO or other phrases relevant to your goal. When getting in touch with a recruiter, remember that their compensation comes directly from client companies (NOT candidates) who task them with finding executives matching specific requirements. You can use LinkedIn to send a note to a recruiter, including a message such as âI understand that you specialize in IT leadership candidates, and as an executive skilled in networking and IT operations, Iâd like to find out if my credentials match your client requirements.â You can also place a quick call for an even better impression and personal touch when introducing yourself. 4 Dont neglect to prepare! Company research is more important than ever. Reviewed the latest information on salary negotiation techniques, interviewing skills, company research, or industry trends? If not, youâll need to catch up to your colleagues, especially those leveraging job search powerhouse Job-Hunt.org or recruiter business forecasts from sites such as the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants (AESC). Donât get caught lagging behind in your preparation for the job search, particularly when you can capitalize on a myriad of online resources to help you land that coveted leadership position. Many employers will quickly reject a candidate who appears to have little knowledge of their operation, market position, or flagship product â" especially when most of this data can easily be found via a quick Google search. Websites such as Payscale.com or Glassdoor provide the opportunity for you to investigate salaries at various career levels. On LinkedIn, Premium Career account holders can also filter job openings by salary level, which may be shown on some postings. For interviewing advice, you can check out commonly accessed career sites (such as LiveCareer.com), as well as business resources including Forbes.com. 5 Stay up-to-date on the hottest trends in executive resume writing. If you havenât caught on to the branded, comprehensive marketing used in todayâs executive resumes, there are several ways to educate yourself on these best practices. A quick Google search for Executive Resume Samples will yield samples of current resume documents, along with articles on best practices for writing about your leadership career. Check out the Toast of the Resume Industry (TORI) resume writing winners to see cutting-edge entries from resume writers worldwide. If you havent seen an award-winning resume lately, prepare to be impressed! Here, resume experts are judged on the use of color, graphics, brand messaging, formatting, and innovation by a panel of recruiters and hiring authorities in an annual competition conducted by Career Directors International. In short, executive job search has forever been altered by these new and emerging trends. Your preparation, research, and understanding of these changes will be critical to your transition, compensation, and success as a candidate for Director, VP, SVP, and C-suite jobs.

Resume Writing For ECE Students
Resume Writing For ECE StudentsResume writing for the students takes some extra effort and a little more time than for other students. They want to make sure they present themselves in the best possible light. With a little more thought and effort, they can also make their resumes look much better than other applicants. This is an area where most resumes are totally ruined. Not everything is mentioned here, so the employer doesn't have a full picture of the applicant. The whole point of this type of resume is to let the employer see why you would be a good hire. That's why it's important to learn as much as you can about the job. That information includes the areas that need to be addressed and how the work will fit into your life. You need to make sure that you're not applying for jobs that don't even exist, so you need to attend the different schools and campus that you're applying to. Take advantage of the resources available. A good resume writing for the student will take a little time to create, but it's well worth it in the end.Every school has different requirements when it comes to the application materials. You might be able to work with one school, but that won't work for all. The best way to find out what your options are is to contact them. They should be able to tell you if the school's guidelines are similar to yours or if there are any extra things you need to do. One of the best places to find schools is by looking online. There's a lot of information available and you can use this to make sure you're working with the right person. Remember that these are just examples, so take what you read with a grain of salt. After you've gone to school for awhile, you'll be able to recognize if you need to spend more time or less time on your resume. Some jobs only take a day or two to complete, while others will take hours. A higher level of detail is nice, but you don't have to get very detailed if you don't have to.Never write your resume on a computer. Mos t resumes are perfectly good on paper, but the potential employer is going to be able to see that your application was written on the computer. In the same vein, never send a resume to employers using Microsoft Word. Your application can be saved to disk, but any words that are handwritten on paper cannot be saved.Remember that your resume is just that: a resume. It's a tool for you to make a first impression, but it's not an actual piece of writing. When your resume is going to be looked at, it should be taken with a grain of salt and you shouldn't feel obligated to submit it.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese The Best Way to Deliver Bad News to Your Manager
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese The Best Way to Deliver Bad News to Your Manager No one likes unpleasant surprises, and that includes your boss. But when you have bad news about sales performance or a new product development, for example, your vice president wants to hear about it right away. So how do youdeliver bad newswithout it becoming a shoot-the-messenger scenario? Jodi Glilckman, author of Great on the Job, says its unrealistic to think that mishaps, miscommunications and outright screw-ups wont happen. They will. The goal, therefore, is damage control. The key whenever there is bad news to deliver to the boss is not panicking (OK, you can panic for 5 minutes, but no more). But then youve got to figure out some solutions to present to the boss because most bosses dont want to hear about problems, they want to hear about solutions. And dont even think of trying tosweepthe whole thing under the rug, Glickman cautions. Its not that hard to convince yourself that problems will disappear on their own if you just let them be, she says. But that strategy is akin to playing Russian roulette with your career you have absolutely no way of knowing, much less controlling, the outcome. If youve got bad news to deliver to the boss, here are some ways to minimize the damage to your career and perhaps even garner some kudos for being good in a crisis: Pick the right time and place. While you dont want to intentionally delay giving the boss bad news, you also dont want to blurt it out as shes running for an elevator or showing some clients around the office. Schedule some time one-on-one when you wont be interrupted and stress that its not something that can be put off. This also will help to let your boss know the topic is serious and youre taking it seriously. Do your homework. If the problem is that a big mistake was made in a report to investors, then the boss is going to want to know why. Glickman suggests collecting information on where things went wrong as quickly as you can, or letting the boss know when all the information on the problem will be available. Be specific and concise. The boss is going to want to know the exact problem and the impact. If a competitor beating your product to market is going to hurt overseas sales by 25%, say so. Avoid blaming a specific person, which (read more here)

Have you Updated Your LinkedIn Page Lately
Have you Updated Your LinkedIn Page Lately Of course youâre on LinkedIn. Every serious job seeking professional is. LinkedIn operates the worldâs largest professional network on the Internet, with more than 120 million members in over 200 countries and territories. According to the siteâs founder, professionals are signing up to join LinkedIn at a rate that is faster than two new members per second. But if youâre like many users, you set up a profile a while ago and havenât gone back in to update it. The site is adding new features all the time, and if youâve not been paying attention, youâre missing out on some great opportunities. Here are some ideas for your update: Add to your headline. Mine used to simply state my title. Now Iâve added that Iâm a writer and an advocate for women in business â" to reflect my upcoming position as the chair of the regional Womenâs Business Center. Make sure your recommendations are visible. I had four, but only one showed up in my profile. Itâs because they hadnât been linked to my current job title, and I hadnât checked the box that made them visible to my profile visitors. Add skills. LinkedIn prompts you for three, but you can add as many as you want. This is one way of helping recruiters and consulting opportunities find you. (Think of it as SEO for your profile.) Add awards and honors, your publications, your blog, or your portfolio of work. LinkedIn connects you to applications that make it easy to share samples of your work. Add organizations that you volunteer for. This is a great way to attract people with similar passions for your cause and find people in your network who might be interested in serving with you or helping the organization in other ways. And while youâre on the site, be generous in your connections. You should aim to have as many as possible. Unlike Facebook and other sites that offer games and other non-business activities, you wonât be in danger of viruses or time-wasting posts. Choose your Facebook friends carefully, but accept almost every offer to connect on LinkedIn. Every connection you make gives you some access to their networks as well. In a recent poll, more than 80% of recruiters said they used social networks to find or screen candidates. If youâre serious about your next job opportunity, youâll make it easy to find you. Hereâs a hard-hitting article from a recruiter on how he searches profiles on LinkedIn. http://www.impacthiringsolutions.com/careerblog/2010/03/22/how-recruiters-search-using-linkedin-what-we-look-for/

Is Striving to be Superwoman Getting Old - Kathy Caprino
Is Striving to be Superwoman Getting Old Iâve spent a good number of years researching the crises of working women today, and how we can overcome them. In the process Iâve learned so much about what it means to craft a rewarding, fulfilling professional and personal life on your own terms. One fascinating trend Iâve observed in working women is something I call âoverfunctioningâ (a helpful concept I learned in my training as a marriage and family therapist). Overfunctioning is doing more than is necessary, more than is healthy, more than is appropriate â" for everyone around you at work and at home. (For more on this tendency in women, see pages 180-1 of my book Breakdown, Breakthrough) Why do we overfunction, and how can we step out the cycle, to reclaim our energy and our lives? Please check out this recent great blog post, âHow to Be a Super Woman Without Being Superwomanâ on WorkIt, Mom! for more on overcoming our Superwoman tendencies. It ainât easy, but itâs definitely worth the effort to shed the cape and give it a rest. Hereâs to functioning thatâs just right!
